Usually, a family member serves as the primary caregiver and, when appropriate, helps make decisions for the terminally ill individual. Members of the St. Joseph Hospice staff make regular visits to assess the patient and provide additional care or other services. St. Joseph Hospice staff is on-call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Hospice team develops a care plan that meets each patient's individual needs for pain management and symptom control. The St. Joseph Hospice team consists of:
The patient and his/her loved ones/family/caregiver, the patient's personal physician, the St. Joseph Hospice medical director, Registered Nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, Mental Health counselors, the Pastoral Care Coordinator, Social workers, Trained volunteers and their Coordinator, and speech, physical, and occupational therapists, if needed.
Our administration and key staff remains "on-call" after the office has closed, seven days a week, 24 hours a day.
The plan outlines the medical and support services required such as nursing care, personal care (dressing, bathing, etc.), social services, physician visits, counseling, and homemaker services. It also identifies the medical equipment, tests, procedures, medication and treatments necessary to provide high-quality comfort care.
What makes St. Joseph Hospice different from other local hospice programs?
St. Joseph Hospice is a locally owned and operated hospice program, with the most experienced staff in the Baton Rouge area, serving a 50 mile radius of Baton Rouge.
Nursing care is provided by hospice experienced Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses with training and expertise in pain and symptom management.
"On-Call" staff consists of both an RN, as well as an LPN, every night of the week, who get to know the patients and families individually, thus providing and assuring continuity of care.
Medical Director is certified by the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine with 6 years experience as a Hospice Medical Director. She has been a key-note speaker for the American Academy of Hospice Physicians. She is the ONLY board-certified Hospice Physician in Baton Rouge.
Administrator/Director of Nursing is a Registered Nurse with over 14 years hospice experience, both on the patient care and management level.
Social Workers are Master's level trained with over 14 year’s hospice experience.
Chaplains have over 6 years hospice experience in pastoral care, providing spiritual care to patients and their families, regardless of religious preference or affiliation.
Bereavement Coordinator follows each family for 13 months after the death of a loved one, and has a bereavement support group which meets twice a month, free of charge.
Volunteer Coordinator has over 3 year’s hospice experience, and has developed many unique volunteer programs to enhance the support of the patients and their families in their homes and nursing homes.
Certified Nursing Assistants are the very best, all with many years experience caring for the terminally ill.
St. Joseph Hospice has been JCAHO accredited since 2002, and is the ONLY JCAHO certified hospice in the Baton Rouge area.
All of these reasons make St. Joseph Hospice the best hospice choice for those needing end-of-life care in the Baton Rouge area.
St. Joseph Hospice has no “hard rules” governing admissions, such as outright bans on IV fluids, parenteral nutrition, transfusions, and PEG feedings. We do not require our patients to opt for DNR status. We diligently work with the patient and their care givers to ease their transition to comfort care, without forcing difficult decisions before their time.
Our Name: The name, St. Joseph Hospice, was chosen by our team because St. Joseph, tradition holds, died in the arms of his son, Jesus, and has been named the patron saint of a peaceful death and of hospice care.
